Most tank problems stay hidden under the lid until they show up at your tap — or worse, at the doctor's clinic. The good news is that a tank almost always sends warning signals before things get serious. Here are seven signs that your water tank needs a clean, based on what our crews see most often across Ahmedabad homes and societies.
1. The water looks cloudy or discoloured
Fill a clean glass and hold it to the light. Clear water should be exactly that — clear. A yellow, brown or greenish tint, or a cloudy haze that doesn't settle, points to sediment, rust or algae inside the tank. This is the most common reason people first call us.
2. There's a smell you can't ignore
An earthy, musty or rotten odour usually means bacterial or algal growth. A strong, lingering chlorine smell can mean organic matter is reacting with the residual chlorine in the supply. Either way, clean water should be odourless.
3. You can see or feel sediment
Grit at the bottom of a stored bucket, particles in the kettle, or a slippery film on the tank walls are all signs that silt and bio-film have built up. On a tank floor this settles as a layer you cannot see from the inlet — only a full empty-and-vacuum removes it.
4. Filters and appliances clog faster
If your RO membrane fouls quickly, taps splutter, or aerators and washing-machine inlet filters keep choking, the tank is very likely feeding sediment downstream. Cleaning the tank protects every appliance after it.
5. Frequent stomach upsets at home
Recurring stomach trouble among family members or residents — with no obvious food cause — is a serious flag. Contaminated stored water is a classic culprit. When health is involved, treat tank cleaning as urgent, not routine.
6. You've never had it cleaned (or don't know when)
Just moved in? Inherited a property? If nobody can tell you the last cleaning date, assume it is overdue. Tanks that sit unopened for a year or more are almost always carrying a sludge layer and biofilm. The same applies right after any plumbing repair or new connection.
7. Visible algae, insects or a loose lid
If you open the tank and see green growth on the walls, mosquito larvae, or that the lid and vents are cracked or unsealed, contamination is actively getting in. A clean should be paired with sealing the tank properly so the problem doesn't return.
One sign is enough to investigate. Two or more means book a clean.
What a professional clean actually fixes
At Hariommhar Enterprises we don't just rinse the tank. We drain it completely, vacuum out the settled sludge, mechanically scrub every surface, and apply a food-grade, potable-water-safe sanitiser with silver-ion protection. You get before-and-after photos on WhatsApp so the result is documented, not just promised. Whether it's an overhead tank, an underground tank or a sump, the process is thorough and mechanised.
Don't wait for the water to get worse
We're based in Shilaj and serve Bopal, Thaltej, SG Highway, Prahladnagar, Satellite and across West Ahmedabad, often with same-day slots. If you recognised even one of these signs, it's worth a quick check.
